Characteristics of the anti-F4/80 antibody clone CI:A3-1 In addition to recognizing kupffer cells, langerhans cells, peritoneal macrophages, and splenic red pulp macrophages, the anti-F4/80 antibody clone CI:A3-1 is distinguished from other F4/80 monoclonal antibodies in that it stains microglia

Characteristics of the anti-F4/80 antibody clone CI:A3-1 In addition to recognizing kupffer cells, langerhans cells, peritoneal macrophages, and splenic red pulp macrophages, the anti-F4/80 antibody clone CI:A3-1 is distinguished from other F4/80 monoclonal antibodies in that it stains microglia (macrophages of the central nervous system) (Lawson et al. 1990). This may indicate that clone Cl:A3-1 recognizes a different F4/80 epitope from other F4/80 antibody clones.

Macrophage heterogeneity in bone marrow culture in vitro.

Macrophages in mouse bone marrow cultures were investigated with macrophage-specific monoclonal antibody F4/80 and anti-Forssman glycosphingolipid (GSL) antibody, which was specific for macrophages in hematopoietic foci. Antibody F4/80 stained two types of cells, small macrophages and large flat macrophages associated with hematopoietic cells. The cytochemical and phagocytotic characteristics w...

Enrichment of CFU-S proliferation inhibitor-producing cells based on their identification by the monoclonal antibody F4/80.

Cells capable of synthesizing a factor that can specifically inhibit the proliferation of haemopoietic spleen colony-forming units, CFU-S, carry many of the characteristics of macrophages. The monoclonal antibody, F4/80, which is specific for murine macrophages, has therefore been used to isolate macrophages from bone marrow. These macrophages were then assayed for their ability to produce the ...

Macrophages in haemopoietic and other tissues of the developing mouse detected by the monoclonal antibody F4/80.

Macrophages are widely distributed in lymphohaemopoietic and other tissues of the normal and diseased adult, where they play an important role in host defence and repair. Although the development of haemopoiesis has been well studied in several species, the ontogeny of the mononuclear phagocyte system remains poorly understood. We have used a highly specific mAb, F4/80, to examine the distribut...

Characterization of Kupffer cells in livers of developing mice

BACKGROUND Kupffer cells are well known macrophages of the liver, however, the developmental characteristics of Kupffer cells in mice are not well understood. To clarify this matter, the characteristics of Kupffer macrophages in normal developing mouse liver were studied using light microscopy and immunocytochemistry. METHODS Sections of liver tissue from early postnatal mice were prepared us...

The mononuclear phagocyte system of the mouse defined by immunohistochemical localization of antigen F4/80. Relationship between macrophages, Langerhans cells, reticular cells, and dendritic cells in lymphoid and hematopoietic organs

The macrophage-specific antigen F4/80 has been localized in mouse lymphoid and hematopoietic tissue and skin using immunoperoxidase staining. The antigen permits identification of early mononuclear phagocyte precursors in the bone marrow, and is present also on larger cells forming the center of hematopoietic islands and lining vascular sinuses. In thymus F4/80+ cells are numerous in both corte...
